Industry Exposure

The M.A. (Economics) programme at IIFT Kolkata is designed to blend academic rigour with practical industry exposure. Students gain insights into the real-world application of economic theories and policy frameworks through multiple platforms—expert seminars, industry interactions, live projects, field visits, and internships.

Programme Structure

The duration of the Programme is two years with two semesters (monsoon and winter) each year. The Courses are divided into three segments:

  • Physical/Virtual Classroom Courses and Viva-Voce (if any).
  • Software Training, Research Seminar, Academic Lectures & Others.
  • Dissertation

Classroom Courses are designed to help students in understanding the concepts and techniques of economic theories and their applications.

A Dissertation Project on any area of International Trade and Finance to be undertaken by a student on a topic approved by the Institute under the guidance of a faculty member of IIFT. Expenses incurred, if any, on the assignment shall be borne entirely by the student and the Institute shall have no financial responsibility in this respect.

The curriculum of the MA (Economics) gets validated both internally and externally keeping in mind the changing global economic environment and advancement in the subject. The bouquet of subjects is designed to give both intensive and extensive knowledge.

Each semester will have four subjects. All subjects in Semester I and II are compulsory. Semester III and IV will have one compulsory course each. Students need to opt for 6 elective courses spread over Semester III and IV. The elective courses will be mostly from the areas of International Economics and Finance. IIFT will decide which elective subjects will be offered in a year.

  • Each Course will have 5 credits; 50 hours of teaching; 20 hours for tutorial and faculty interaction.
  • Teaching will be for 15 weeks which will be spread over 4-4.5 months
  • Dissertation will have 10 credits. For the Dissertation to be carried out in Semester IV, the topic will be decided in Semester III along with the allocation of supervisor. It is to be noted that a faculty from any discipline may be appointed as a co-supervisor, but the supervisor must be from the Economics discipline only. If a faculty from the Economics division of another campus is assigned as a supervisor, then another Economics faculty from the same campus as the student is registered in shall also be assigned as the co-supervisor. Further, no guest faculty will be appointed to supervise students in the Dissertations.
  • A student needs to complete the dissertation work prior to the commencement of the end term examination during the fourth semester.
  • For the batch of 2024-26, a student needs to submit a synopsis of the dissertation tentatively by 15th November 2025, the interim report tentatively by 15th February 2026 and the last date for submission of the final report is tentatively 15th March 2026.
  • The final report should be submitted hardbound to the Economics division accompanied by plagiarism check report (maximum 15% similarity allowed) and a declaration carrying that the work is original.
